Burg Rheinfels is a ruined medieval castle overlooking the Rhine River in Sankt Goar, Germany. Built in 1245 by Count Dieter V von Katzenelnbogen, it was strategically important for collecting tolls from passing ships. It was expanded into a massive fortress over centuries, becoming one of the largest and most imposing castles on the Rhine. Despite withstanding numerous sieges, including the Thirty Years' War, it was largely destroyed by French revolutionary troops in 1797. Today, the impressive ruins offer breathtaking views and a glimpse into the region's rich history. Some parts of the castle are accessible for exploration.
